When the Existing Wireless Intercom Failed, Amaro Electronics Engineered a Complete Solution

This remote Blue Mountains entrance required more than a standard video doorbell. The gate was separated from the residence by steep terrain, dense vegetation and a difficult communication path. Amaro Electronics upgraded the failed system with a Hikvision IP video intercom, point-to-point wireless connection, live gate viewing and remote gate release.

“The challenge was not simply installing an intercom. We had to carry live video, visitor communication and gate control between a remote entrance and a residence separated by difficult terrain.”
John Amaro — Amaro Electronics

The Starting Point: A Remote Gate with an Unreliable Connection

Real Amaro Electronics Project
Remote main gate entrance in the Blue Mountains before the wireless intercom installation

The Existing System Was Not Suitable for the Property

The property already had a wireless gate intercom, but it could not provide the dependable communication, live video and access control required between the remote entrance and the house.

The main gate sat away from the residence, with a significant change in elevation and substantial vegetation between both points. A normal short-range Wi-Fi connection was not a practical solution.

The upgraded system needed to allow the owner to see the visitor, communicate through the intercom, review the entrance from a monitor or mobile phone and remotely activate the existing automatic gate.

Remote Main Gate Entrance positioned away from the residence
Steep Elevation Major change in height across the property
Dense Vegetation No clean, simple communication path
Existing Gate Motor Required relay and control integration

Step by Step: Understanding the Site Challenge

The Previous Wireless Intercom

The original system was not delivering the stable long-distance communication required by the customer. It was removed and replaced with an IP-based solution designed around the actual property.

The Residence Was Located Well Below the Gate

From the elevated entrance, the communication path travelled toward the residence below. The distance, slope, trees and vegetation made this very different from a normal suburban intercom installation.

The Wireless Path Crossed Dense Vegetation

The marked route shows the approximate communication path through the terrain. The connection had to operate despite substantial trees, shrubs and an imperfect line between the gate and house.

One Strategic Post Supported the Integrated System

The entrance post provided the elevated position needed for the video intercom, CCTV camera and point-to-point wireless equipment. This allowed multiple security technologies to work together from the same remote entry point.

Real Field Evidence

Live Point-to-Point Video Test Before Final Installation

Before permanently positioning the receiving equipment, Amaro Electronics performed a live field test across the property. The antenna was still in a provisional position while the Hikvision monitor displayed the entrance video in real time.

Vehicles moving near the gate remained visible with continuous playback and without the noticeable freezing expected from an unstable network connection.

Not permanently positioned. Difficult terrain. Dense vegetation. Live video still transmitted successfully during the field test.

The Complete Upgrade: Intercom, Wireless Network, Gate Control and CCTV Working Together

Existing Gate Controller Integration

The Hikvision intercom was connected with the property’s existing automatic gate controller. Power, network and relay connections were arranged so authorised gate release could be activated from the completed intercom system.

Hikvision Outdoor Video Intercom

The new outdoor station provided visitor video calling and two-way communication while the existing keypad remained available for authorised coded access.

Live Gate View Inside the Residence

The indoor Hikvision monitor received a clear live image from the remote entrance. The owner could see the visitor, communicate and operate the compatible gate-control function from inside the house.

Mobile Access and Remote Viewing

The compatible mobile application showed the outdoor station online, allowing remote live viewing, visitor communication and supported gate-control functions from a smartphone.

Wider CCTV Verification During the Day

A dedicated CCTV camera provided a wider view than the intercom camera alone. The owner could monitor vehicles, visitors, the driveway and activity around the remote entrance before or after operating the gate.

Infrared night CCTV view of the remote gate and driveway at a Blue Mountains property

Infrared Gate Coverage After Dark

At night, infrared CCTV coverage continued monitoring the driveway, entrance and surrounding gate area. This provided wider visual verification alongside the Hikvision video intercom after dark.

Final Outcome

The owner could verify the visitor, communicate with the entrance and remotely operate the gate across a difficult property.

The final solution combined a Hikvision IP video intercom, point-to-point wireless communication, mobile access, indoor monitoring, existing gate-control integration and dedicated day-and-night CCTV verification. Instead of forcing the customer to adapt to the limitations of the previous system, the new design was built around the terrain, distance, entrance conditions and the way the property was used.

Video Intercom Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers about remote gates, point-to-point networking, mobile access, CCTV integration and automatic gate control.

Can a video intercom work when the gate is far from the house?
Yes, depending on the site. Remote gates can sometimes be connected using suitable cabling, fibre, network extenders or professionally configured point-to-point wireless links. Distance, terrain, vegetation, available power and equipment compatibility must be assessed before recommending a solution.
What is a point-to-point wireless connection?
A point-to-point wireless connection creates a dedicated network link between two locations, such as a main residence and a remote gate. It may be used to carry compatible intercom, CCTV and network data where a conventional cable route is difficult or impractical.
Does a point-to-point link always require perfect line of sight?
Clear line of sight is normally preferred because it provides the strongest and most predictable result. Some sites may still support a usable connection with partial obstruction, but trees, terrain, buildings, interference and weather can affect performance. A field test may be required before permanent installation.
Can the same wireless link carry intercom and CCTV video?
A suitably designed network link may carry compatible intercom, CCTV and other IP network traffic. Bandwidth, camera resolution, recorder design, switches, power and network configuration must be evaluated to ensure dependable operation.
Can an existing electric gate be connected to a new intercom?
Often yes. The existing gate controller, relay input, safety system, power supply and access-control arrangement must first be checked. Additional gate technicians, locksmiths or electrical work may be required depending on the existing equipment.
Can the gate be opened from the indoor monitor?
Yes, where the intercom and gate controller are compatible and the release connection has been correctly integrated. The user can verify the visitor through live video and then activate the configured gate or door release.
Can I answer the intercom and open the gate from my phone?
Compatible IP video intercom systems can provide mobile notifications, live viewing, two-way communication and supported access-control functions through a smartphone application. Remote use depends on internet availability and the final configuration.
Will the existing keypad continue to work?
It often can. In this installation, the existing gate keypad remained available for authorised coded access while the Hikvision video intercom added visitor calling, live viewing and remote gate operation.
Will the intercom still work if the internet goes down?
Local functions between compatible devices may continue operating across the property’s internal network, depending on the system design. Mobile notifications and access from outside the property may stop until the internet connection returns.
Is this solution limited to Hikvision intercoms?
No. Point-to-point networking may support compatible IP intercom and CCTV equipment from different manufacturers. The equipment, protocol, bandwidth, power, relay requirements and application support must be checked before installation.
How far can a point-to-point intercom connection reach?
There is no single guaranteed distance for every property. Performance depends on the wireless equipment, frequency, antenna positioning, elevation, interference, obstructions and available network capacity. A site assessment and practical field test provide a more reliable answer than a distance claim alone.
Do you inspect the property before quoting a remote gate intercom?
Yes. Long-distance projects require the gate location, house, terrain, cable paths, power, internet, existing gate controls and mounting points to be assessed before the final system and price can be confirmed.
